At the age of fourteen James began writing music in a range of styles whilst learning to play drums, synthesisers and gaining skills in recording and mixing his own songs. He particularly took an interest in modern progressive and hard rock, (for example: Tool, A Perfect Circle, Alice in Chains) eventually leading him to fuse these influences to form the band Cassini with musicians Simon Lascelles and Mark Coleman.
